Dark circles were my first real skincare problem. I'd use something for a month, see nothing, and decide I was doing it wrong. I wasn't. The products were.
Most eye creams only treat one cause. There are three.
What's Actually Going On
Which type you have changes everything.
Pigmentation -- Brownish. Gets darker in sun. More common in deeper skin tones.
Vascular -- Bluish-purple. Blood vessels showing through. Worse when you're tired or had a drink.
Hollowing -- Volume loss making a shadow. No cream fixes this.
Creams can help with the first two. Not the third.
Ingredients That Actually Work
For pigmentation-based circles
- Vitamin C -- my main one. Works on melanin over time. Needs a stable formula.
- Niacinamide -- fades pigment. Slower, but gentle.
- Retinol -- fades spots. Start low around the eyes.
- Kojic acid, tranexamic acid, azelaic acid -- if C irritates.
Vascular circles
- Caffeine -- reduces puffiness. Morning only.
- Vitamin K -- thin evidence, but some people find it helps.
- Peptides (especially Haloxyl) -- Haloxyl specifically has some data behind it.
For hydration and firmness
- Hyaluronic acid -- won't fix circles. Makes the under-eye look less exhausted.
- Ceramides -- the eye area loses barrier function easily. These help.
- Peptides (Matrixyl, Argireline) -- longer game.
Eye Creams Worth Using
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
I've recommended this more than anything else. About $20 and no fragrance.
Don't expect miracles. But tone under the eyes does improve over time.

RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream
Pigmentation and lines -- RoC is where I'd start. One of the few drugstore retinol formulas I trust to actually be stable.
Expect adjustment. Retinol around the eyes irritates at first. Every other night to begin, always with SPF the morning after.

Paula's Choice Resist Anti-Aging Eye Cream
I go back to this one fairly regularly. No reactions ever. If you want to treat multiple things at once without a prescription, this does it.

The INKEY List Caffeine Eye Cream
Under $15 and the caffeine actually works. Apply it cold in the morning.

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex
Around $110. Works on multiple dark circle types at once. When nothing else has worked, this is what I'd spend the money on.

Applying It
Less than you think. A grain of rice per eye. Ring finger, tapping not rubbing, outer corner inward along the orbital bone.
Morning and night. SPF in the morning if you're targeting pigmentation -- sun undoes what you're building.
Managing Expectations
Hollowing and genetics -- no cream. Talk to a derm about filler or laser if that's your type. For broader pigmentation concerns beyond the eye area, see skincare for hyperpigmentation.
For pigmentation and vascular -- consistent use makes a real difference. Just not fast.
FAQs
How long until I see anything?
Vitamin C and niacinamide, 4-8 weeks daily. Caffeine works the same morning -- temporary.
Can I just use my regular moisturiser?
Sometimes. Fragrance-free and gentle -- probably fine. Just avoid strong actives or heavy oils near the eye.
Vitamin C and retinol -- can I use both?
Fine, just don't layer them. C in the morning, retinol at night.
Does SPF help with dark circles?
Yes, if yours are pigmentation-based. SPF 30+ every day. The most important step if that's your type.
